Raising big money

Challenge

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association is the world’s largest trade association of for-profit fitness clubs. Each year the association appeals to its VIP members to help pay for lobbying and government relations work in Washington, D.C., and in state capitals. This is a group that grows weary of fielding constant fundraising appeals. How do you keep the message fresh?

Strategy & Tactics

Mark Robinson wrote and coordinated production of a targeted fundraising brochure. The copy emphasized how important government relations is to the future of the industry. The strategy did not stop there. To appeal to this particularly motivated group of entrepreneurs, and to articulate the importance of many club operators getting involved, Robinson PR and its creative team produced an innovative “thank you” brochure. With an intricate and creative photo manipulation technique, this brochure expressed the association’s recognition of how hard each club member was working. Using personal photos, it also explained how each link in a human chain helps to effect political change in Washington, D.C.

The cover of the “thank you” brochure combined a stock Capitol photo with a custom photo shoot. Using personal snapshots, the interior paid tribute to owners’ perceived strength in the industry.

Results

Robinson PR produced a fundraising brochure, and a follow-up “thank you” brochure, for less than $15,000 in total, including printing. The association received more than $750,000 in contributions.
