Today former Governor Angus King, independent candidate for the U.S. Senate, got a first-hand look at what's happening here. (Photo courtesy of Russell Caron Photography.)Craig Pendleton and I coordinated a visit to Biddeford today by independent candidate for the United States Senate, Angus King. (Click HERE for video.)

Craig is executive director of the Biddeford-Saco Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and he kicked off King’s visit with a great meeting at Chamber headquarters, at the top of York Hill. The candidate then moved on to the Pepperell Mill Campus in Biddeford, greeting the many residents and business owners who are the engine of this thriving “city within a city.”

Maine’s former governor --- like Governor Paul LePage and U.S. Sen. Susan Collins before him, who both visited earlier this year --- was enthralled by the energy and vitality on the campus. Everybody, regardless of political leanings, agrees that what's happening here is special.

Most people just drive right by the location without knowing what’s inside: a perfect incubator for entrepreneurs, and a perfect refuge for residents who are fans of downtown living. A tour is always an eye-opener for first-time visitors.

A Critical Insights tracking poll reports that of those folks who think Maine is heading in the right direction, 46% believe that is because Governor LePage is "doing a good job," while "improving economy/jobs" is the next reason cited, at 24%. For those who believe the state is heading in the wrong direction, only 37% blame the governor, followed by 29% who blame the bad economy and a lack of jobs.

I spoke to MaryEllen FitzGerald, president of Critical Insights, about the numbers. She told me the Governor's approval rating has dropped just 4 percentage points, from 47% to 43%, since the same measurement was taken in the Fall of 2011. She agrees with me that the governor’s fairly stable favorability rating is surprising, given an onslaight of derisive editorial condemnations like this one by columnist like Bill Nemitz, and the ample negative press coverage about budget cuts and LePage’s use of the line item veto.

The poll was conducted from May 2 through May 7, so only some of those polled knew about LePage’s advice on Sunday to “all you able-bodied people out there: Get off the couch and get yourself a job.” Would his ratings have been even higher if all those polled had seen that news coverage? Impossible to say without hard data. But the poll does make you wonder, and raises the question of whether LePage’s core economic messages are resonating with Maine people, even if the media doesn’t like his less-than-elegant way of delivering them.

The poll was released to the press on Friday afternoon, so everyone will probably be reading about it in Saturday's papers.
After 2 years of nothing happening, things are starting to move.

Along with several other concerned business people, I started a group called Twin Cities Renaissance in 2000, in response to concern about the MERC incinerator. Our network grew to over 1,000 people.

The group has been dormant since the city of Biddeford walked away from "The Governor's Task Force To Close Maine Energy" a few years ago. I had worked closely with Biddeford's mayor at the time to persuade Governor Baldacci to appoint the task force. The mayor's close relationship with the governor's senior policy advisor, Karin Tilberg, was a key factor in the formation of the task force.

The task force closed up shop when the City left, and so ended any practical role for TCR. No MERC solution can happen without state involvement, because solid waste policy is hammered out in Augusta. Ask the state for help and then spurn it, well...at that point you have literally arrived at a dead end.

We have a new mayor, however, and all the parties are talking again. Lots of stuff in the news, as you probably know. So I set up a TCR Facebbok page today. I'll try to populate the page with useful information as this complex debate unfolds. Here's the link, so you can "Like" it.

One of the most charitable companies in Maine

JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED: Inspired by Grahamtastic Connection and her boss Ira Rosenberg, Kathy Prior of the Prime Motor Group (center) presents a brand new iPad2 to staff at Maine Children's Cancer Program, (left to right) Jay Westra, RN Maine Children's Cancer Program MCCP, Deirdre Hogan LSW MCCP, Elizabeth Murray, LSW MCCP, Eric Larsen, M.D., MCCP Medical Director. In the Portland Press Herald tomorrow, you’ll be able to read about how Prime Motor Group recently donated an iPad 2 to Grahamtastic Connection, contributing to a fundraiser in Springvale that raised more than $15,000. If you don’t know about this charity, you should. Visit their web site.

Prime’s most recent financial donation is a nice story all by itself. But on top of its generous financial support, which is substantial and steady, what impresses me even more is the time and extra effort that Ira Rosenberg, his wife Judy, and the Prime employees put in to help this charity and many others. The reason you can read about Grahamtastic in tomorrow’s paper is because Prime arranged for the publicity. Think about that. Not only do they agree to support this worthy cause, but they go out of their way to make sure the rest of Maine knows about it, too.

I stopped in to the Grahamtastic fundraiser in Springvale several weeks ago, and who did I run into? Yep…several Prime employees. Out on a Saturday night. On their own time, pitching in for a good cause. That’s the company culture that Ira and Judy have built, purposely, and I think we’re lucky to have them here in Maine.
I got an invitation to my friend Jim O'Neil's 50th birthday party, which is coming up soon. Of course all the musicians are invited to bring their instruments, and I'm sure there will be a hellacious jam. The invitation made me think of all the good times I've had playing with Jim over the years, especially in the early years. He tolerated my limited talent very well. We have a lot of good stories, including pissing off state troopers, oblivious sound guys, brutal van rides to Houlton, and plenty of other misadventures.

One adventure will always stand out, of course, and that is renting an RV and a keg for a Stones concert in Foxborough and having Mick Jagger showing up to sit in. Jim, Sven Holcomb and my brother Chris never missed a beat on guitar. It was truly unbelievable.
Of course any old ‘schmoe like me can cobble something together with handy tools like iMovie, YouTube, Photoshop, etc., but not with the level of polish and sophistication evident in Ron’s work.
Silver lining for Mitt: I bet Etch-A Sketch gets a nice little boost.

Reminds me of the time I had discovered Mike Barnicle had plagiarized George Carlin. After the brouhaha was all said and done, Carlin sent me a copy of “Brain Droppings,” signing it and writing, “Thanks, Mark.”Get ready to rumble --- right OUT of the White House.

I was initially puzzled. Then it dawned on me --- all the media coverage had caused book sales to skyrocket.
